Outcast by the Outcast: Tim Burton’s Racial Blindness
Rick is a Tim Burton fan, without a doubt, from classics like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, to the self-indulgently weird Planet of the Apes. But recently, he’s realized that something isn’t quite right with Burton’s body of work: a pervasive blind spot that limits racial representation (if any) to tired tropes, deep caricatures and bit roles. In his post, Rick untangles his feelings as a fan who hopes for better and offers up an interesting analysis.
CAPTION: “And in that moment, I swear we were all vintage sun dresses.”
Our dearest Moxie is suffering from Manic Pixie Dream Exhaustion, most recently caused by the release of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Ruby Sparks. Where is the Manic Pixie Dream Boy, or Manic Pixie Dream Non-Fetishized Lesbian, or Manic Pixie Black Girl, she asks? Good question, and you should hop on over to our site for a chat about the MPDG trope.
It should come as no surprise that we here at Geekquality tend to geek out over a lot of things, including music, especially looking at music through the same lenses we apply to TV, film, games, etc. In her most recent post, Moxie talks third wave feminism, hip-hop, and the vital role femcees have in subverting notions of sexuality, agency, and femininity in our (pop) culture. You seriously need to read this.
Moxie chatted with Justin Simien (writer/director/producer) and Lena Waithe (producer), part of the team behind Dear White People, an indie film in production that’s been making some big waves. Talking about their inspiration for the project, the role of social media in being an indie filmmaker, and what it means to be Black, check out the awesome conversation.

Why Cultural Sensitivity Matters, or a Love Letter To Avatar
Elyse writes a note of appreciation to the thoughtful creators behind the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Through their careful research, good integration of cultural references, and a diverse cast of characters, the producers provide something that’s sorely lacking in mainstream media. Recap: The Everdeen in the room
One of our editors decided to leave her secret lair (not entirely unlike Richmond), where she feverishly murmurs of Oxford commas and dangling modifiers, to add her thoughts to the ongoing discussion of race in media, particularly addressing the response to Elyse’s post and the use of The Hunger Games casting as an example. You know, if you haven’t had enough of the discussion (which we hope you haven’t).
Let’s all say a big Thanks! to our Moxie for taking the time to answer questions that keep getting asked, and making points that still continue having to be made, when it comes to race representation in fantasy media. Read her full post, United Colors of Albion: Race in Fantasy Media on our site!
